Fleadh File 1 - Getting Ready For Munster Fleadh

June 2012

Welcome to the new weekly update on the Munster Fleadh Cheoil happenings. Here you will find the latest news, gossip and information about the Munster Fleadh Cheoil which is taking place next month in Dungarvan.

Things are really taking off following our very successful Launch in Clonea Strand Hotel at the end of May. The countdown has begun, and with only 30+ days to go to the first event of the Fleadh Cheoil, activity has reached fever-pitch back at the base.
The first draft of the Fleadh Souvenir booklet (Clár) is almost complete and includes amongst other items, some remarkable photos of other historic musical events that have taken place in Dungarvan down through the years. These include photographs taken during the 1957 All-Ireland Fleadh in Dungarvan, and many feature well-known and wonderful local Musicans from times gone by. We are very grateful to the Waterford County Museum (and its amazing archives!) for assisting us in locating these wonderful photos.
The souvenir Clár also includes several very interesting articles as well as the full programme of 2012 Fleadh events. An essential aid for Competitors, it contains full details of competition events and information regarding venues and timetables etc. The programme will be on sale during Fleadh week and apart from being a practical aid and interesting read, it also makes a lovely memento of the 2012 Munster Fleadh Cheoil in Dungarvan. The Fleadh Committee is very grateful to all those in the local business community who helped fund this initiative!
During the week, we had another meeting with the local Gardaí to discuss traffic management over the competition weekend, and to finalise arrangements made in our earlier discussions. We must also acknowledge the wonderful co-operation from Joe Flaherty and the Town Council in relation to car-parking arrangements over the Fleadh weekend. Ben, our Stewarding Maestro, has had lots of offers of help with stewarding over the competition weekend (20th/21st/22nd), but we are still looking for a few more Helpers. If you will be around, are fit and healthy and would like to help us, please contact Ben on 087 9981759. We would be delighted to hear from you!
The Fleadh's accommodation officer has been very busy, particularly now that several the County Fleadhanna are over and competitors for the Munster Fleadh are in the process of being finalised. Over 20 venues have been checked and confirmed for the various competitions. Accomodation has also been procured for the Adjudicators and Fleadh Officials, and the Catering team have been busy making arrangements to ensure that all the Officials will be well looked after during their stay in Dungarvan.
Our very own new-born baby, the Comeraghs Summer School is creating a lot of attention across the South-East. It has attracted so much interest, that it is now looking increasingly likely that we will have to add to the 22 Tutors already booked, in order to accommodate the growing number of Students!
Great progress has also been made in the organization of entertainment. This week, the tickets for the amazing line-up of Fleadh Concerts have been printed and will go on sale very soon. DANÚ, Caladh Nua, Raw Bar Collective and North Cregg are guaranteed to attract a lot of attention, and with ticket prices within the €10-€15 price range, will sell quickly. Full details next week on how and where to get yours!
Finally, our Fleadh Committee is made up entirely of Volunteers. We are dependent on Sponsorship and fund-raising to cover the costs of hosting the Munster Fleadh Cheoil - the largest of the provincial Fleadhanna. We are hugely grateful to our 14 main Sponsors, all those local Businesses – big and small, Commercial organisations, Local Authority Departments, Officials, and indeed everyone who has come on board with us and given us financial assistance and support. If you have not already contacted us, and would like to offer some financial assistance, we would love to hear from you - please contact Comeraghs Comhaltas on 087 3638002.
