Sliabh Luachra Music

Our series of concerts continues on Saturday March 8th with a unique line-up of Sliabh Luachra music. Since the mid 1950s right through the following three or four decades the late Ciarán Mac Mathúna often broadcast recordings of two of the greats of Sliabh Luachra music, the brother and sister combination of Denis Murphy and Julia Clifford. Since their demise several years ago their music and that of their mentor, the legendary Padraig O Keeffe has been promoted worldwide by among others the wonderful fiddler Gerry Harrington. A one-time resident of West Waterford now residing in Roscommon Gerry has featured in and instigated some of the most iconic recordings of the past 20 years. Once again Gerry has taken the initiative and over recent years has cultivated a musical partnership with flute player Billy Clifford, son of Julia and nephew of Denis Murphy. A CD of Gerry and Billy is in the final stages of production and no doubt trad followers are looking forward to a CD from this terrific combination.

For those lucky enough to be able to attend their concert in Cúil na Sméar Hall on March 8th a magic preview is in store. Tickets at €12 will be available next week form Ben O'Neill's or from branch members.
