About Comhaltas Craobh na gComarach

Comeraghs ComhaltasComeraghs Comhaltas a branch of the national Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann was formed in 1980. Based in Cúil na Sméar in the foothills of the beautiful Comeragh Mountains, our aim is to celebrate and promote Irish traditional culture, music and heritage. We do this mainly through education, entertainment and involvement with other community, charitable and voluntary organisations.

All our work is done voluntarily by a large number of dedicated, impassioned people.

Activities

Classes
Our music school is at the heart of our education programme and provides instruction in all traditional instruments. We currently have approx. 150 pupils and train many of our own teachers through our classroom assistant programme ensuring continuity and consistency into the future. Step, set and sean nós dancing classes are also provided. Classes take place on Tuesday and Friday evenings in Cúil na Sméar from October through to May.

Concerts
Comeraghs Comhaltas has been running a series of Autumn/Winter concerts in Cúil na Sméar hall for many years. These concerts continue to attract some of the best- known recording artists and performers and news has spread rapidly about the incomparable acoustics in the venue. In recent years, our concerts have featured the likes of Bobby Gardiner, Tony McMahon, Matt Cranitch & Jackie Daly, Danny O'Mahony, Johnny 'Ringo' McDonagh, Steve Cooney, Micheal O'Raghaillagh, Raw Bar Collective and many others.

Summer Séisiiún
Every year in July and August, we stage a weekly Seisiún show as part of the nationwide Comhaltas Summer Seisiún events. Our Seisiún group, Cúl Cheoil perform each Tuesday night in the Park Hotel, Dungarvan, and attract large audiences of locals and visitors.

Adults
Our education programme also caters for adult learners - Comeraghs Comhaltas hold weekly "self-help" music sessions on Monday nights for adult learners in Cúil na Sméar Hall while the monthly excursion down the road to Millstreet is always eagerly anticipated.

Public Performances
Our Musicians provide entertainment at many local community, festival and charity events.  In recent years, we have performed during the Waterford Festival of Food, the St Patrick's Day celebrations in Grattan Square, the Global Intelligence Conferences and many other civic events.
We also take part in several charity initiatives - visiting and performing in local nursing homes and helping with fundraising e.g. Trad for Trocaire and the annual WLR FM/Lions Club Christmas Appeal.

Cúl Cheoil

Singing
The Comeraghs branch also facilitates the famous Singers Club (na Conneries) in Dillon's Bar, Dungarvan. This club meets monthly on the second Monday of the month, attracts well-known guest artists and is very popular with local traditional singers

Heritage and Culture
Our younger members enjoy informal Irish language classes throughout the year. All members are encouraged to take part in events such as bilingual guided walks visiting sites of historical and cultural interest in our local area. In 2012, we completed the clearance and landscaping of the old Connerys site in Bohadoon, which was officially opened by the Australian Ambassador, his Excellency Mr Bruce Davis during the Munster Fleadh Cheoil.

Recent highlights include bringing the Munster Fleadh Cheoil to Dungarvan in 2012; the opening of the first Irish Music Summer School in the South East, and the creation of the Connery's Memorial Garden. We hope to continue the tradition of the Féile in Dungarvan and in 2013 we hosted the Dungarvan TradFest / Féile Dún Garbháin.
